The cotton textile industry in india has had a glorious history. India textiles were once highly esteemed in the international market for their fine quality. India calicoes are mentioned in marco polo's travel account too. During the british rule,the traditional textile industry in india was systematically suppressed.
The modern textile industry began in1818 at fort Glaster near calcutta (now kolkata) but closed down after some time. In 1854 , the bombay spinning a and weaving company was set up in tardeo , south bombay ( now mumbai ) this location is proved to be very favourable and as aresult new mills were opened in this area. This production was facilitated by the creation of a railway line in the mid - 9th century which connected Bombay to the Deccan region. This new development made the transporation of raw material and finished products to their respective sites and easier.
