Write a short note on girdle

Dear Student,

Girdles are bony structures composed of one or more components. There are two girdles in the human body, the pelvic girdle found in the hip and the pectoral girdle found in the shoulder.
Pelvic girdle

Pelvic Girdle is a complex of bones that connect the spine and the legs.

Structure : It consists of a pair of hipbones or coxal bones. Three different bones named (the ilium, the pubis and the ischium) are fused together to form one hipbone. These three bones are joined together to form a hollow cavity called acetabulum, where the head of femur (thigh bone) is attached.

Function : Pelvic girdle protects the internal sex organs, urinary bladder and intestinal region of digestive tract. It also provides support and balance to the spine and helps in leg movement.

Pectoral girdle

Pectoral girdle is the set of bones which connects the upper limb to the axial skeleton. It consists of clavicle (collar bone) and scapula. Humerus bone articulates to form the shoulder joint.
