The ₹500 and ₹1000 demonetization is a step taken by the Indian government in an attempt to curb the counterfeiting of banknotes allegedly used for funding terrorism as well as a crackdown on the black money of the country. The move is also aimed at curbing corruption and smuggling. On 8 Th November 2016 at 8:15 pm IST, Prime Minister Sh. Modi through an unscheduled televised address announced that ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes of the current series won't remain legal tender from 9th November 2016 0:00 IST. He also announced that new banknotes of ₹500 and ₹2000 would be shortly issued.
