Coal and petroleum are non- renewable resources of energy. It takes millions of years for the formation of these fuels due to which there judicial use is necessary.Faster is the rate at which these fuels are used faster is the depletion rate of these fuels.
Steps which can be taken to conserve coal and petroleum:

1. Use of public transport like buses and trains instead of self owned vehicles help to conserve petroleum.
2. Use of cycles wherever possible instead of using motorbike or car
3. Coal can be conserved by optimal use of lights as electricity is mainly produced from coal.Donot forget to turn off lights when not in use.
4. Use energy saving electrical devices such as compact fluorescent lamps.
5. Use of fuel efficient vehicles.
