Write about the reason and nature of poverty, exploitation , shortage and hunger during British times

The following are some of the major reasons of poverty:

1. Low level of economic development

2. Demographic trends like high growth rate of population

3. Structural inequalities like caste system

4. Lack of oppurtunities in the form of education and employment to get out of poverty trap

5. Unequal distribution of resources in world economy

6. Surplus labour in primary sectors of economy rather than being diverted to other sectors.
   
   Nature of poverty :
    

Poverty in India has declined from 55 % in 1973 ( with 56.4% in rural areas and 49% in urban areas) to 36 % in 1993 ( with 37.3% in rural areas and 32.4% in urban areas). Poverty rate further came down to 26% in 2000. 
According to recent figures ( 2013 data ) released by Planning Commission, Poverty in urban areas has been estimated to be 13.7% and in rural areas, it is 25.7%. 
In Urban areas, Poverty has decreased at a much higher rate as compared with rural areas due to better infrastructure and industrialization. People in rural areas lack access to financial resources.
