Earth's climate is mostly influenced by the first 6 miles or so of the atmosphere which contains most of the matter making up the atmosphere. This is really a very thin layer if you think about it. In the book The End of Nature, author Bill McKibbin tells of walking three miles to from his cabin in the Adirondack's to buy food. Afterwards, he realized that on this short journey he had traveled a distance equal to that of the layer of the atmosphere where almost all the action of our climate is contained. In fact, if you were to view Earth from space, the principle part of the atmosphere would only be about as thick as the skin on an onion! Realizing this makes it more plausible to suppose that human beings can change the climate. A look at the amount of greenhouse gases we are spewing into the atmosphere (see below), makes it even more plausible.

Global warming is an increase in the temperature of the earth's surface. It occurs because of an increased concentration of the green house gases. Green house gases are the gases which traps the solar radiations released back by the earth. This helps in keeping our planet warm and helps in human survival, but the increase in greenhouse will lead to an increase in the earth's temperature and will result in the global warming. To prevent global warming, we have to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere.

Global warming- a warning for mankind:

Several points which could be taken into consideration while framing this answer are:

Global Warming is an increase in the earth's atmospheric temperatures widely due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution.

Global warming is melting of ice from poles because of the increase in the extent of carbon dioxide. If due to global warming all the ice from our poles melt into water, the water level on earth increases and submerge the land.

Another major cause of global warming is deforestation.

Sea levels are expected to rise between 7 and 23 inches (18 and 59 centimetres) by the end of the century, and continued melting at the poles could add between 4 and 8 inches (10 to 20 centimetres).

Less fresh water will be available.

Species that depend on one another may become out of sync. For example, plants could bloom earlier than their pollinating insects become active.

Natural calamities and disaster would occur at lesser frequencies and with more destructive power.Hurricanes and other storms are likely to become stronger.

Severe heat waves would lead to death of millions of people all around the world.

While the idea of swimming in a warmer ocean is pleasant to most human beings, increasing ocean temperatures could cause serious ecological damage.
