write down the anatomical features of a monocot stem.
The following are the anatomical features of monocot stems:
- Multicellular hairs or trichomes seen in dicot stems are absent in monocot stems.
- The hypodermis region is made up of sclerenchyma.
- The ground tissue is composed of a mass of uniform cells, unlike dicots where distinct layers such as cortex, endodermis and pericycle is present.
- Vascular bundles are numerous and scattered in the ground tissue.
- Vascular bundles are smaller near the periphery and progressively increase in size towards the centre.
- Vascular bundles are collateral and closed.
- Oval or round shaped xylem vessels are seen arranged in the form of Y.
- Sieve tubes and companion cells are exclusively present in phloem.
- Vascular bundle are surrounded by sclerenchymatous bundle sheath.
- Medullary rays and pith are absent.
- No secondary growth is seen in these stems since cambium is absent.
