Write essay on winter season.

Dear student,

Winter is the coldest season of the year in some parts of the northern and southern hemisphere.  It usually lasts for about three to four months and is caused by that particular hemisphere being farthest away from the sun in the earth’s orbit around it. In many places, winter is characterised by snow fall, strong winds and freezing temperatures. However, in tropical countries like India, winter is not very harsh, unlike in temperate countries like Canada, Russia and Afghanistan.

In India, temperatures during winter are in the average range of 2-25°C. Starting from November to February and sometimes extending until March, the winter days in India are mostly pleasant. Sometimes though, the Indian winter can turn brutal with the arrival of winter rains and severe cold waves from the west to the east of India, passing through the northern states. The temperature drop is more noticeable in the northern states and less so in the south. The hilly regions in the north also experience some snowfall in the month of January. In the areas surrounding the Himalayas, winter is extremely cold and they experience heavy snowfall. Temperatures can even drop below freezing point. These include the six Himalayan states – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Northern West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh. Manipur and Nagaland, which aren’t located in the Himalayas also experience snowfall. In the southern states, winter is characterised by only a small drop in temperature, except in parts of the Western Ghats where it can get very cold.

Winter is the peak season for tourism, because travellers tend to shy away from the hot tropical weather of India. It is also the season where migratory birds travel in hordes and stay the winter in our country.
