Write one example of active transport and explain why it is active transport?

Solution:

Active transport is the transport of molecules from their lower concentration to higher concentration with the expenditure of energy. Mitochondria in cells produce ATP, pumps in the cell membrane that contain transport proteins, which utilize the energy of ATP to pump a substance up the concentration gradient, from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration gradient.
For example, transportation of sodium out of the cell and potassium into the cell by the sodium-potassium pump.
