Uruk is a famous ancient Sumerian city, located in the modern country of Iraq. It is situated on the banks of the erstwhile channel of the Euphrates river. Uruk's location on the banks of Euphrates allowed for domestication, agriculture, and urbanization. Uruk can be considered in the similar fashion as Harappa is considered for Indus valley civilization, for the Sumerian civilization of mid-4th millennium BC. The evidence for early urbanization of Sumerian civilization can be found in multiple typical sites in Uruk. The city lost its prime importance around 2000 BC, in the context of the struggle of Babylonia against Elam, but it remained inhabited throughout the Seleucid (312–63 BC) and Parthian (227 BC to 224 AD) periods until it was finally abandoned shortly before or after the Islamic conquest of 633–638.
Archeologically, Clay tablets have been found at Uruk with Sumerian and pictorial inscriptions that are considered to be among some of the earliest recorded writing, dating back to approximately 3300 BC. Other prominent artifacts found in Uruk are : The Mask of Warka or "Lady of Uruk" and "Sumerian Monalisa". This dates back to 3100 BC. Bull sculpture of Jemdet Nasr period, dating back to 3000 BC is also found.
