Mr Otis is a rich, practical American. He buys Canterville Chase despite being warned about it being haunted. He is not unnerved by the clanking of the ghost's chains and offers him a lubricator! He is a sensible and brave man. His love for his children becomes apparent when he gets extremely worried about Virginia and leaves no stone unturned to find her. he is also humane as he provides a proper burial to the ghost to give him release from all his suffering.
Mrs Otis had been a New York Beauty and is now a handsome lady of strong disposition. She too is a brave and pragmatic lady. Not one to be frightened easily, she displays her protective and caring side when she offers the ghost medicine after he laughs his most horrible laugh.
