The Emperor of Japan was a gracious host and a good friend of the king of Luggnagg. He was determined to allow Gulliver a favour for his friend. He was extremely surprised by Gulliver's request of not wanting to trample a crucifix but allowed it all the same. He was also cautious and sensible since he kept this a secret so as not to put Gulliver's life in danger.
