Write the major features of Rowlatt Act.

The first world war ended in 1918. The Indians were expecting to be granted swaraj. Instead the government appointed the Rowlatt Commission and passed the Rowlatt Act on 6 February 1919.
This act empowered the government to imprison anyone without a trial, and to search any place without a warrant. People called this a 'black day'. Newspapers declared 6 April 1919 'national humiliation day', and it was followed by hartals and strikes from end of the country to the other.
