write the practical for the following:-
? to characterize hcl as an acid
? to characterize naoh as base

Solution:
Experiment to show acids (dilute HCl) and bases (dilute NaOH) :

ACIDS
Chemical species which donates H+ ions when dissolved in water.
The pH of acid is less than 7.
Acids turn blue litmus solution into red color.
Hydrochloric acid reacts with zinc metal to produce zinc chloride and hydrogen gas.
Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq)  ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

BASES
Chemical species which donate OH ions when dissolved in water.
Sodium hydroxide is a strong base with a pH value greater than 7.
It turns the red litmus solution into blue.
Sodium chloride reacts with zinc metal to produce sodium zincate and hydrogen gas. The reaction is given below:

Zn(s) + 2NaOH(aq)  Na2ZnO2(aq) + H2(g)

Sodium hydroxide neutralizes hydrochloric acid to produce salt (sodium chloride)

NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
