Write the role of the diaphragm and its Coastal muscles in the breathing process.

Dear Student,

The diaphragm and coastal muscles aid in the breathing process by assisting in inhalation and exhalation-

The diaphragm and the coastal muscles contract during inhaling, causing the thoracic cavity to expand.  The pressure inside the lungs falls. The air travels from outside (high pressure) to inside the lungs (low pressure). As a result, inhalation occurs.

The diaphragm and coastal muscles relax during exhalation, resulting in a reduction in the size of the thoracic cavity.  The pressure inside the lungs rises. The air travels from inside the lungs (high pressure) to outside (low pressure). As a result, exhalation happens.
