Khuswant Singh was accompanied by his grandmother while going to school. As the temple was attached to the school, it was advantageous for both. The narrator sat in a row with other students and learnt his alphabet and prayers in the school while his grandmother sat inside the temple and read the scriptures. In this way they spent their time in the village school.
