You are provided with a negatively charged gold leaf electroscope. State and explain what
happens when
a. a glass rod rubbed with silk is brought near the disc of electroscope.
b. an ebonite rod rubbed with fur is brought near the disc of electroscope.
c. an uncharged metal rod is brought near the disc of electroscope
d. a glass rod rubbed with silk is rolled on the disc of electroscope

Dear Student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query:

a) A glass rod rubbed with silk will acquire positive charge, so when it is brought near the disc of electroscope then the leaves will attract each other and hence contract.

b) A ebonite rod under the above circumstances will get negatively charged and hence as per the above observation the leaves with dilate.

c) If the metal rod is electrically neutral then, nothing will happen to the leaves.

d) If the glass rod is rolled on the disc then, it being positively charged, i.e., electron deficient will gain electrons from the disc as per the laws of charging by conduction and hence the disc which will loose certain amount of charge will make the leaves contract.
