You are provided with a positively charged gold leaf electroscope. State and
explain what happens when
a. a glass rod rubbed with silk is brought near the disc of the electroscope.
b. an ebonite rod rubbed with fur is brought near the disc of the electroscope.
c. an uncharged metal rod is brought near the disc of electroscope
d. a glass rod rubbed with silk is rolled on the disc of the electroscope.

Dear Student,

a) A glass rod rubbed with silk will acquire positive charge, so when it is brought near the disc of electroscope then the leaves will attract each other and hence contract.

b) A ebonite rod under the above circumstances will get negatively charged and hence as per the above observation the leaves with dilate.

c) If the metal rod is electrically neutral then, nothing will happen to the leaves.

d) If the glass rod is rolled on the disc then, it being positively charged, i.e., electron deficient will gain electrons from the disc as per the laws of charging by conduction and hence the disc which will loose certain amount of charge will make the leaves contract.

When uncharged rod is touched on the disc of a negatively charged gold leaf electroscope, the divergence between the gold leaves decreases as unlike charges attract each other. It is to be noted that a charged body can also attract an uncharged body, so repulsion is the sure test to determine whether the body is charged or not.
Therefore, when the uncharged rod is rolled on the disc of the negatively charged gold leaf electroscope, the electrons from the rod are transferred to the electroscope due to the negative charge and thus the rod becomes positively charged. Now the unlike charges attract each other and the divergence decreases.
