A Four Day School Week?

Meritnation|Sep 23rd, 2015 12:06pm

no school on friday chalkboardJust imagine what would it be like having longer weekends and going to school only for four-days a week. Does that sound interesting to you? Think about all the fun activities you’d be doing in your extra day off if you get to stay a little longer in school but only for four days! Also, doing academically great in class!! Would you like to trade for a life like this? Sounds cool, right?

A recent research from the USA indicates that this can actually be beneficial for students. Researchers from Montana State University and Georgia State University have been investigating the impact of a four-day school week a schools in the western state of USA, Colorado, where schools have adopted a four-day week to cut transport and utility costs.

During the study, the researchers analysed reading and maths scores of students from grade 4 and 5. The researchers found that the maths scores of the students improved when the school switched to the four-day week. On the other hand, there was no improvement in the reading scores but no decline was also noticed. The findings of the researchers surprised themselves thinking that the compressed week but a longer day in class would act a burden especially for the younger elementary students and would result in poorer academic performance.

Mary Beth Walker, dean of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State says “we thought that especially for the younger, elementary school kids, longer days on a shorter school week would hurt their academic performance because their attention spans are shorter. Also, a longer weekend would give them more opportunity to forget what they had learned.” Teachers found that there were less absentees and teachers had the opportunity to use different types of “instructional processes” to teach.

Students do you wish something like this? We would love to hear your thoughts on this! 🙂

i don’t think we should go with the idea as such now….
we are in the habit of a five day school and miss mary beth walker said.. we might forget things … and actually instead of making it a weekend we could have an early leave …but it would become an issue in schools who have saturdays working too…
hence i think that we must just think a lot before taking any step further…

This is not going to help as we might get disconnected with what we have done in the past week. Also it increases the time period of the vacations giving us more time to while away rather than use thoughtfully which we do in 2 days as we know of the time constraint. Making it three days is going to reduce the work, but also increase the time for the same allowing us to relax and get a laid-back attitude.

Is system will definitely flop if implicated and the students will be the only sufferers and the school should be for as any as days possible.
