CBSE Class 10: Critical Chapters dropped from 2020 SST exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education has dropped three chapters from the history textbook for Class 10 syllabus, from the textbook named “Democratic Politics Book-I. CBSE has decided that three chapters, namely ‘Democracy and Diversity’, Popular Struggle and Movements’ and ‘Challenges to Democracy’, will be not evaluated in board examination 2020. This decision was made at the behest of the HRD Minister and is believed to be a part of a curriculum rationalisation exercise undertaken by the ministry to reduce the “burden” of the curriculum on students.

The chapters will be evaluated in the periodic tests but students know that they won’t be tested in the boards so they’re not likely to go in for in-depth study.

Ex-chairman of NCERT, Krishna Kumar, said,”The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks that students read today were carefully designed after the National Curriculum Framework, 2005. The book was designed in a way which promoted flexibility among teachers as well as students. The idea was to unlink textbook from examination and promote students’ interest in the subject.” “The NCERT should be the body that should decide the curriculum. However, CBSE is calling the shots. What is happening now is that CBSE is taking away the flexibility from the textbooks,” he added.

Additionally, an entire chapter called ‘Democracy In the Contemporary World’ is also being removed from the political science textbook for class IX.

How do you feel about the decision taken by CBSE? Do you think it will affect students for the better or otherwise? Tell us in the comments below.
