CBSE Class 8 Maths: Important Topics for SA1

class 8 sa1 maths The SA1 or the CBSE Summative Assessment I has either begun or is just round the corner. Students are busy with their last minute revisions and trying to get the most out of their study hours these days.

Chapter 1 – Rational Numbers

To understand rational numbers, one must have a solid foundation in fractions, ratios, decimals, parts of wholes operations with whole numbers and an understanding of measurement concepts. Since students have already studied above topics in earlier class, this chapter will take less time to cover.

Important Topics:
1. Additive and Multiplicative Identities for Rational Numbers
2. Distributive Property of Multiplication for Rational Numbers
3. Rational Numbers between Given Rational Numbers

a) From the past question papers, it is observed that one question from the topic “Rational Numbers between Given Rational Numbers” is assured in the examination. b) One short question from “Distributive Property of Multiplication for Rational Numbers” is expected to come in examination.c) This chapter has weightage about 12-15 marks, questions will be easy from this section. Practise well the questions provided in NCERT.

Chapter 2 – Linear Equations in One Variable

This topic needs much practice so practice questions from NCERT as well from other reference books.

Important Topics:
1. Solution of Linear Equations that Contain Linear Expressions on Both Sides
2. Solution of Equations that are Reducible to Linear Form

a) There are 90% chances of one question from the topic ” Solution of Linear Equations that Contain Linear Expressions on Both Side” in the examination. Solution finding questions are frequently asked in the exams. b) Practice a variety of questions from different topics to gain speed. Practice questions from previous year papers, sample papers and model papers within the time frame you have at the time of final exam.c) Calculation mistakes are a major factor in this chapter, so take care of it while attempting the paper.

 

Chapter 3 – Understanding Quadrilaterals

Properties play an important role in this chapter. Remember all of the properties with the help of diagrams. Do not forget to revise them at the last moment.

Important Topics:
1. Angle Sum Property of Polygons
2. Properties of the Sides of a Parallelogram
3. Properties of the Angles of a Parallelogram
4. Properties of the Diagonals of a Parallelogram

a) Always draw the diagram while attempting the question from this chapter.b) Practise as many as questions as you can for this topic.c) Practice questions from previous year papers, sample papers and model papers within the time frame you have at the time of final exam.d) This topic has a weightage of about 20% of the total marks. Students should give extra attention to this topic.

Chapter 4 – Practical Geometry

This chapter is completely based on practice, students are advised to solve all the questions of NCERT.

Important Topics: Construction of Special Quadrilaterals

a) Draw the rough diagram while attempting the question. Use compass with full concentration to draw shapes, angles or lines accurately.b) Do not draw diagrams with pen.c) Try to attempt questions from this chapter at the end (after attempting all of the other questions).

 

Chapter 6 – Squares and Square Roots

This is a time taking chapter. Students are advised to practice this chapter a week before the exam so that they can easily revise it later on.

Important Topics:
1. Pythagorean Triplets
2. Prime Factorisation Method of Finding Square Roots
3. Square Roots of Perfect Squares by Division Method

a) Some important topics from this chapters are “Pythagorean Triplets”, Prime factorisation and square roots of perfect squares by division method. b) Write down all of the formulae on the paper and revise them again and again. c) Major questions from this topic are either 1 mark or 2 mark questions.

Chapter 7 – Cubes and Cube Roots

Be sure to go through the relation between the units digits of a number and that of its cube.

Important Topic: Prime Factorisation Method of Finding Cube Roots

a) Practice as many questions as you can on to convert the non-perfect cube into the perfect cube. b) Efforts should be laid on the prime factorisation as that will bring good results in this chapter.

 

Chapter 11 – Mensuration

This chapter is quite scoring but students need to solve different types of problems so that they may get familiar with the language of different questions (as in this chapter, there are mostly text based questions).

Important Topics:
1. Area of Polygons
2. Surface Areas of Cubes and Cuboids
3. Surface Area of Right Circular Cylinders
4. Volumes of Cubes and Cuboids
5. Volume of Right Circular Cylinders

a) You should know the difference between the area and volume. b) Be sure to go through all formulas of area and volumes before the exam.

Chapter 12 – Exponents and Powers

Students should know the difference between exponents and powers.

Important Topics:
1. Numbers with Negative Exponents
2. Laws of Exponents of Integers

a) Go through all the laws of exponents as they play a significant role in this chapter. b) You should know the standard form of the numbers and how to convert the small and large numbers in the standard form. c) Do questions with full concentration.
