In the age of Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook and Viber that allow you to connect to your loved ones in less than a second, it seems almost silly to write letters and wait for a week to get a reply from the receiver.  After all, when you can get instant access to them and talk to them over Skype why would you wait for so long to get your word across? You have so many emoticons to express your feelings, so many pictures you can send across with one touch on the screen!

However, this immediate touch-base phenomenon has its own share of pitfalls. Because you are connected to each other instantly, you sometimes hardly think before saying something and many a times end hurting the other’s feelings even if you didn’t actually mean to.

When you are corresponding through letters, you have the time to reflect on the situation before penning down your answer. It also gives you time to express yourself better. When you write a letter you can be sure that your feelings will be honoured and will be preserved in a manner that communication through an invisible internet super highway never can achieve. When somebody reads your letter, he will immediately feel that connect with you, as if something tangible has passed from your hand to theirs. This is why we call letter writing an art.

People have written beautiful letters to each other expressing some of the most beautiful experiences through their penmanship and have won over a lot of hearts. To encourage such penmanship and help people become better connected with each other emotionally, the Department of Post, Ministry of Communication & IT, Government of India is organizing the 43rd Universal Post Union Letter Writing Competition 2014 for students on the 6th of January, 2014.

Students of up to 15 years of age can participate , and the subject for this year’s competition is:

Music Can Touch Lives.

The purpose of this Letter Writing Competition is to nurture students’ creativity and sense of sharing by giving them a platform to express themselves through writing and to contribute to the strengthening of international friendship.
