Maharashtra Govt. Proposes 8-Hour Learning Day For Students

maharastra schoolsThe Maharashtra State Government has made a proposal to have an 8 hour working day for school students, when recently a suggestion was made as a part of the report sent to the Central Government for the New Education Policy. However this has less chances of turning into a rule. Maharashtra Government’s suggestion is not finding support from schools.

The report states that “although RTE mandates the minimum number of teaching hours for the teachers, there is no emphasis on mandating the learning time of students. Lots of research shows that an 8-hour school time is more effective in improving learning outcomes than others”.

This means that if the learning time was extended to eight hours the overall school functioning would also get extended by one or two more hours. Stating that students do not have long attention span, a school owner said that it’ll be tiring for both teachers and students if the time is extended. Another point added was about the commute students have to undertake from home to school. If this proposal were to be implemented, we would be looking at 10 hour work days for students. Their entire playtime would be finished and they will be completely exhausted by the time they reach home.
