Must Reads for AIPMT Aspirants

If you haven’t already started your preparation for PMT 2015, your better start now— because this is the most crucial period of your academic life. Ideally you have to man your preparation, the very first day you plan to pursue medical stream. Since both exams come side by side it is important to balance both and get good score as well.
PMT is the Pre Medical Test for aspirants of MBBS/BDS and some other courses. Biology constitutes the major part of PMT (50%), hence it is important to concentrate on biology.

Though a majority of students take additional assistance from tutors and specialised classes, there is always a need for personal study time. However, students often do not know how to make the best out of this time and end up wasting most of it. Or maybe, at times, they do not have the right tools or elements to give them the scope to practise.
So we have compiled a brief list of books for students aspiring to appear for the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). The following are a few out of several good ones available on the internet and in bookstores.

BIOLOGY

This is the most important subject for any entrance examination. As one could see from the table, many colleges have a large percentage of questions from Biology. Also, among the three subjects, it is straightforward and easier to prepare.

1. NCERT Biology Part 1 and Part 2 – (Click Here for Free NCERT Solutions) – NCERT and CBSE books are very good and it is advisable to learn from these books first and then you can refer some more books. The best thing about NCERt books is that language of the books makes it easier for the student to understand the topic better.

2. Truemans Elementary Biology – This book is designed to help CBSE board, class XII, biology students and those who are writing medical board examinations. The book has many descriptive diagrams that help in understanding and memorizing key biology concepts.

3. Pradeep’s Publication – Biology – A great book for every student of Science. It has got huge amount of Questions and Solution.The lessons are fully explained and the reader will be satisfied with the material provided from competitive point of view. It has nearly 2000 page (combination of two volumes for class 12 NCERT) and extra interesting facts in between the chapters. The terms are very well defined, there are ample illustrations and solved problems and the clear structuring of the book makes the study of Biology an enjoyable and easy .

4. S Dinesh Objective Biology – This book helps you a lot and covers the portion also for AIPMT examination.The exhaustive questions bank provided by the book is a must for every AIPMT aspirants.

This is one subject many medical aspirants detest because most questions involve numericals. But take heart; if you get the logic right in solving a given problem, scoring in this paper is quite easy.

1. NCERT Physics for Class XI and XII – (Click Here for Free NCERT Solutions)  -Physics NCERT textbook have been written marvelously well for Physics. Solve all problems given in NCERT as they cover range of problems from easy to tough.

2. Concept of Physics by HC Verma  It’s the only book till now which has explained all the concepts precisely with a very exhaustive set of problems. 4. Concept of Competition Physics PMT – This book comes with complete formats and nature of questions which can be expected in AIPMT exam. This book covers every all of question. And students can boost their confidence after going through this book.

CHEMISTRY

In terms of vastness of syllabus, Chemistry has the largest number of concepts to cover and hence students  must have sufficient time in your time table to prepare for the same.

1. NCERT Chemistry text books of class XI and class XII (usually sufficient)– NCERT books are written and organized in the way that it touches all the concepts. NCERT books forms the base of the subject for further explanation. If your foundation is strong you can build many dream houses on that. The students who opt to crack IAS, IPS exams also prefer to choose NCERT books for their preparations.

2. Chemistry by Dinesh – This is useful book for objective paper preparation . Answers of all the MCQs are given in such a way that you can read it on your own.

3.  Modern’s  ABC of  Chemistry – This book has a wide range of questions to understand examiners preferences in testing chemistry concepts and also the description is very easy . It covers NCERT syllabus and huge number of conceptual questions makes it a must read.

4. Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd- Organic Chemistry by Morrison & Boyd is a classic in its field at UG level. Its detailed explanations and ability to make students think make organic chemistry a lot more enjoyable. It is a bit funny at times, like in stereo chemistry, the authors write, “Remember everything has a mirror image, except a vampire, of course!”. What is truly likable is that the authors try to reason out almost everything, and that’s what aids understanding.

Start taking mock tests by start of April to assess where you stand, especially proctored tests to assess your spend and accuracy. Write formulae, key points, on a set of cards and organise according to preference. But remember, exams test your understanding more than memory.
