As a part of the Digital India campaign, the CBSE and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) have joined hands to hold a national level Digital Wellness Online Quiz competition.

cbse cyber safety quizWith the world becoming more dependent on digital resources and apps, school kids are increasing getting active on the internet on various sites, social media and chat rooms. Today’s kids cannot imagine a world without the internet. However, many of them are not aware of the kind of threats they may face online and how to ensure their safety. The aim of the competition is to raise awareness about such threats and popularise the concept of digital wellness – cyber safety among students.

The online competition is open till July 17. It is divided into two age categories: Class 6 to Class 8 & Class 9 to Class 12.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

1. In order to participate, students need to fill in the form HERE.

2. After the form is submitted, the Student ID will show up. Students need to note down this Student ID and then click on ‘Start Quiz’.

3. The quiz has 10 objective type questions with four answer options each.

The questions are based on cyber safety, ranging from knowing how to prevent virus attacks to basic details of the Information and Technology Act.

Once a student clicks on his/her answer choice and hots the ‘Next’ button, the site immediately displays whether or not the selected answer was correct. If the selected option is incorrect, the site displays the right answer along with an explanation of the reason behind it.

4. Students need to complete all 10 questions step by step by hitting the ‘Next’ button.

5. After finishing the 10 questions, the screen will show the result of the test. If the student scores less than 10, then an option for a certificate of participation to be printed and/or downloaded would appear on the screen.

6. If the student scores 10/10 in the online quiz will move on to Level 2. A new page opens up with one qualitative question that needs to be answered. As the entire quiz is online, the evaluation at both the levels is automated and instant.

7. 4 winners will be chosen from each state (two from each category). Of the two winners, the board will choose one boy and one girl in each category. These winners will be invited to the Digital India Week Grand Event.

5. The online competition is open till July 17.

The initiative has been welcomed by parents and teachers alike.

Payal Deka, parent of a Class 6 student, said I think this initiative by CBSE is very well appreciated esp for younger kids who may not know the threats that loom in the internet world. Therefore, educating them about the basic do’s and don’ts is a good first step, particularly for parents who might not have yet discussed cyber safety and related issues with their children.

Vikram Singh, parent of a Class 8 student said, You see children always imitate their parents. They are great observers, look up to their parents as role models and want to be like them. And in the new age world, we as adults use smartphones/tablets/laptops for a wide variety of activities i.e. reading news, checking mails, searching information, communicating with our peers etc.

In such a scenario, it becomes very difficult to discourage our children to not use these gadgets for things they like and do at this age, be it watching videos on youtube, playing games, downloading apps, etc. The only solution is to educate our children on precautionary and safety measures so that they are aware of the Dos and Donts of the cyber world.

It is great that CBSE is taking initiative in this regard as we ourselves have never had a formal comprehensive training on cyber safety and have more or less learnt it on our own, which makes it difficult to teach our children well about this topic.

CBSE is urging all affiliated schools to conduct similar activities at their level as well.
