Meritnation|Sep 4th, 2014 11:11am

CBSE is all set to conduct the Problem Solving Assessment (PSA) for the ongoing session 2014-15 on 20th November, 2014. PSA is aimed at assessing students’ abilities to analyse given life situations, to comprehend and interpret written text and other important higher order thinking skills. Prescribed as a compulsory test for students of classes 9 & 11, PSA is also open for students of class 10 & 12 , who wish to improve their grades. READ – PUBLIC NOTICE.

The PSA test is an important one, as it helps students gear up for the on-coming examination and further student life, in general. The test will have questions related to language conventions, qualitative reasoning and quantitative reasoning. For all you students in class 9, your PSA scores will also count towards FA 4 ,  and all class 11 students will be issued a separate certificate for the same.

Being relatively new as a practice, PSA draws a lot of queries and questions from students the year round. The following are some Frequently Asked Questions accompanied by answers to the same.

Q1. Are PSA Scores added to academic Scores?

Yes, they are. PSA scores are counted as a part of SA4. The SA4 marks make up 10% of the total score of class 9 and the same percentage for class 10 as well. These scores will be reflected in one language (English or Hindi), Maths, Science and Social Studies. The same score gets reflected for a student in both classes 9 and 10.

Q2. What exactly does the PSA Question paper contain?

PSA is an exam based on qualitative and quantitative reasoning. There are questions pertaining to logical reasoning, basically. Also, you can expect questions that test your communication abilities and creative and analytical thinking skills. The questions you face are likely to contains questions regarding logic, comprehension and reasoning.

Q3. Who sets the paper for the PSA? The school or the Board?

The question paper for PSA is set by the Board and not the school. The question papers and OMR answer sheets are sent to different schools a little before they are to take place.

Q4. Is PSA of any use for average students?

Since PSA tests are designed to improve generic thinking and develop higher order thinking skills, preparing for them will also make preparation for core subjects better.

Q5. Can students with a poor PSA result in class 9 improve their score?

Yes, students who wish to improve the scores they received in class 9 can do so by appearing for them again in class 10, along with class 9 students. Only the best scores are reflected along with the final result of class 10. The same applies for students who were not able to attend their PSA tests in class 9.

Q6. How can students prepare better for PSA?

Students may score well by being regular with their practices and also take the assistance of sample papers available. These sample papers for classes 9 and 11 are available, along with the sample OMR sheets on the CBSE website (cbse.nic.in), under the academic section.

Q7. Where do the PSA scores reflect for students of classes 9 and 11?

In case of class 11 students, they receive a certificate with their PSA scores. In case of class 9 students, their PSA scores are reflected in the CCE certificate they receive after class 10.

Q8. Is there a specific time table or syllabus for the PSA?

There is no specific time table, class time or syllabus for PSA. However, the paper will be based on the following three bases:

I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a
blog that’s both equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you
have hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few people are speaking intelligently about.
I’m very happy that I came across this during my hunt for something relating to this.
