How To Prepare For A Written Exam Effectively

Meritnation|Feb 4th, 2014 12:00pm

What comes to your mind when you imagine a student on the night before his or her final exam? Almost all of us would envision the student sitting, surrounded by a pile of books, guides and the consoling mug of ‘stay awake potion’ ( read coffee), visibly fazed by the oncoming examination.

In the presence of humongous amounts of study material prescribed to students secondary school onwards, it becomes a task for students to know this, know that and then know some more. At this point, what would he or she not give to know an easier way out of the mess? For students who wish to make a mark in their examinations without losing their peace of mind, enlisted and described below are some methods that would potentially help with major learning portions:

Couple of Months to Exams

  • Systematize Your Preparation: Rome wasn’t built in a day. One look at that fat book lying on your table and chances are, the same would apply to your exam prep as well. A logical way to get through the entire, or a large part of your course would be to take into account the number of topics and chapters you are supposed to study, MUCH IN ADVANCE. A month or two in advance should be enough, or else panic is bound to strike.
  • Know Your Books, Know Your Concepts: You happen to be the best judge of what you know and what you don’t. Make sure all the concepts and theories included in the syllabus are being regularly looked at, being applied practically and efforts being made to clear persistent doubts. Do this to a level where it is not mental torture to recall them when needed. Be sure you have indexed all the books enlisted in the syllabus.
  • When at it, give it your all: What any parent or teacher will tell a student preparing for examinations is, to concentrate and not get distracted, which, in fact, is pretty helpful. A student studying smart would increase the number of hours ever so slightly and in turn, put in greater concentration levels into whatever he studies. Guaranteed benefits include lesser tension, greater retention and time enough to play that odd game on the computer.

Couple of Weeks to Exams

  • Don’t Slacken: If you have been following the regimen mentioned above even remotely, you are pretty much on the right track. What you should do: keep it up. What you really shouldn’t do: Let the fact that you know a good portion stop your efforts. Look for innovative ways to test yourself! Once you are certain of particular level, go on to the next and challenge yourself. You might happen to reach weak areas this way, which, in fact, is only another scope for improvement.
  • Know When You Deserve a Break: Yes, you have earned it. So go relieve yourself of any unwanted anxiety and make space for a walk in the park, an odd English or Hindi flick or the latest episode of your favorite TV series. Go jump around and dance if you want to. But then, don’t get exhausted; the next thing you know, you dozed off last night and could not complete that last topic!

A day Before

Take it easy; go for one topic at a time: This will definitely sound and feel nonsensical to any student with 10 or 20 topics to be prepared or revised within the last day. No one expects a student in the higher classes to take their sweet time and leave out major parts. But once you reach the stage for revision, even in case you have not prepared enough, too much information at once will definitely clog your brain and deter you from performing. Concentrate mainly on things you feel are going to help you score. Strategising, even at this stage, can be helpful.

The Night Before

Que Sera Sera: Legend says you revise things before you sleep and they stay with you forever. Umm… Maybe; provided it is not 3 in the morning when you’re doing it! So ideally, you should get a good night’s sleep. Stay awake in the exam hall instead…

Also, trust your preparation and hard work. You have done your job diligently, you are going to reap benefits too.

An Hour Before

  • Make sure you have every piece of equipment and ‘ammunition’ (read stationery & geometry box) required for the task. This being among the last steps of preparation should not take much and increase your confidence as well.

  • Hopefully, you had proper breakfast before you left! Otherwise, not only are the hunger pangs going to trouble you in the exam hall, you might just end up feeling sick.

  • Do not stuff information in your brain. You are bound to vomit it out the wrong way.

The regime described below is an interconnected one. One without the other is hardly effective. So if you want the fruit, you either climb the tree or at least make the jump. The climb has to be steady; the jump, well-practised. Bring out the achiever in you and let nothing budge you from your aim!

Good Luck!
