Captain Hagberd had come to Colebrook, a little seaport, ten years back. He had bought a piece of land and built two cheap yellow brick cottages on it. He occupied one of them and let the other to a retired blind boat builder Carvil and his daughter Bessie. The cottages had a common wall. A line of iron railing separated their front gardens and a wooden fence, their back gardens.
