Direction Tests

Objective

After going through this lesson, you shall be able to understand the concept of direction and distance.

Introduction
In this lesson, we will study about the questions related to direction and distance. Such questions are meant to judge the students's ability to sense the directions correctly.

Direction: To slove these types of questions one must have the basic knowledge of direction. The following figure shows the four main directions and four cardinal directions

Main Directions

  • North
  • South
  • East
  • West
Cardinal Directions
  • North west
  • North east
  • South west
  • South east
Along with these eight directions we have two other directions, namely
  • Clockwise Direction: When something is moving in the same direction as the hands of the clock
                                                                          
  • Anticlockwise Direction: When something is moving in the opposite direction as the hands of the clock
                                                                        

Distance: The other main part of these questions is distance. So, one also must have the basic knowledge of geometry, such as Pythagoras theorem.
  • Pythagoras theorem:
Look at the following right triangle ABC.

We have the following relationship between the sides of a right-angled triangle ABC.

(AC)2 = (AB)2 + (BC)2

This relation between the sides of a right-angled triangle is known as Pythagoras Theorem.

Example: Geeta starts walking facing north. After walking a distance of 8 km, she turns left and walks 6 km. How far and in which direction is she from her starting point?
