ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Annelies “Anne” Marie Frank (1929–1945) was one among millions of Jewish victims of the Holocaust—the mass murder of Jews under the German Nazi regime during the Second World War. Born in Frankfurt, Anne lived most of her life in Amsterdam. As a thirteen year old, during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, she went into hiding in the “Secret Annexe” of an office building with her parents and her elder sister. Two years later, in 1944, the group in hiding was betrayed, captured and transported to different concentration camps. Eventually, Anne died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Anne used to keep a journal while she was in hiding. These writings, recovered by her father after the war, were first published in the Dutch language in 1947 as Het Achterhuis. Dagboekbrieven 14 juni 1942 – 1 augustus1944 (The Annex: Diary Notes 14 June 1942 – 1 August 1944). The Diary of a Young Girl (1952) is the English version of the same. Published in over 60 languages, the diary comprises the remarkable observations and reflections of a girl who lived under extraordinary conditions. It is one of the most enduring documents of the twentieth century.
