Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856–1915) was the founder and the first president of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama – an educational institution for the upliftment of African-Americans. Born a slave on one of the many plantations in Virginia, he went on to become one of the foremost African-American educators and reformers. He wrote more than a dozen books, and countless articles for newspapers and magazines. Up from Slavery (1901) is his autobiography. It has been translated into several languages. It has inspired millions and is still popular today.
