• Facts or figures, collected with a definite purpose, are called data
• Statistics is the area of study, dealing with the presentation, analysis, and interpretation of data
The first section is about the Collection of Data. This particular section is explained with the help of an activity. Exercise 14.1 contains only 2 questions.
Moving to the next topic- Presentation of Data.
• Students must also look upon terms like raw data, range, frequency, ungrouped frequency distribution tabletally marks​.
• The groupings discussed in the chapter are called ‘classes’ or ‘class-intervals’, and their size is called the class-size or class width. In each of these classes, the least number is called the lower class limit and the greatest number is called the upper-class limit, e.g., in 20-29, 20 is the ‘lower class limit’ and 29 is the ‘upper-class limit’.
In this topic, students will find solved examples and exercise questions to make the concept more comprehensible.
Next, the Graphical Representation of Data is explained. This includes:
a. Bar graphs
b. Histograms of uniform width, and of varying widths. This is a form of representation like the bar graph, but it is used for continuous class intervals.
c. Frequency of polygons
• Frequency polygons can also be drawn independently without drawing histograms
• The mid-points of the class-intervals are called class-marks.
• Class-mark = (Upper limit + Lower limit)/ 2​​
Exercise 14.3 contains several unsolved problems for the assessment of students. The measure of central tendency is the last topic of this chapter. The three measures of the central tendency for ungrouped data are:
• Mean: It is found by adding all the values of the observations and dividing it by the total number of observations
• Median: It is the value of the middle-most observation(s).
• Mode: The mode is the most frequently occurring observation

Give one example of a situation in which

(i) The mean is an appropriate measure of central tendency.

(ii) The mean is not an appropriate measure of central tendency but the median is an appropriate measure of central tendency.

When any data has a few observations such that these are very far from the other observations in it, it is better to calculate the median than the mean of the data as median gives a better estimate of average in this case.

(i) Consider the following example − the following data represents the heights of the members of a family.

154.9 cm, 162.8 cm, 170.6 cm, 158.8 cm, 163.3 cm, 166.8 cm, 160.2 cm

In this case, it can be observed that the observations in the given data are close to each other. Therefore, mean will be calculated as an appropriate measure of central tendency.

(ii) The following data represents the marks obtained by 12 students in a test.

48, 59, 46, 52, 54, 46, 97, 42, 49, 58, 60, 99

In this case, it can be observed that there are some observations which are very far from other observations. Therefore, here, median will be calculated as an appropriate measure of central tendency.
