Energy is a property of an object to do work, which can neither be created not destroyed, only can be transferred via fundamental interactions.
Suppose, a ball of mass m is raised to a height h from the ground. Due to the raise the energy of the ball increases. This rise in the energy is same as the work done by the external force which raises the ball.
