    what is sedimentation,decantation and filtration?

Sedimentation is the process of settling down of heavy solids in a mixture of a liquid and an insoluble solid. Decantation is the removal of the clear layer of the liquid without disturbing the settled solids. Filtration is the process by which very fine insoluble solids can be separated from a liquid-solid mixture by passing it through a suitable porous material.

Sedimentationdescribes the motion ofmoleculesinsolutionsorparticlesinsuspensionsin response to an external force such asgravity, centrifugal forceorelectric force.

Decantationis a process for theseparation of mixtures, carefully pouring a solution from a container, leaving theprecipitate(sediments) in the bottom of the container.

Filtrationis a mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium to fluid flow through which the fluid can pass, but the solids (or at least part of the solids) in the fluid are retained.

sedimentation and decantation - when the heavier components in a mixture settels down after water is added to it the processis called sedimentation. when the water along with the dust is removed the process is calleddecantation. filtration-it is a processby which solid wastesof larger size can be seperated from the requiredsoln.by using filter.

Sedimentation - Sedimentation is the settling of suspended solid particles in a liquid under the influence of gravity.

Decantation - 'Decantation' is a fast method for separating a mixture of a liquid and a heavier solid. In this process , first the solid impurities are allowed to sediment at the bottom of the container. Then, the pure liquid is poured out carefully from the container into another container. The precipitate or solid is left behind at the bottom of the container.

Filtration - When chemicals are mixed together without any chemical change, they form a mixture since there is no chemical change the substances in the mixture can be separated. solutions are an example of a mixture. To use filtration as a method of separating a solid from a liquid, you need these apparatus: Conical flask, filter funnel , filter paper and a stirring rod. set the apparatus up then pour the solution into the funnel paper and stir gently. The stuff left in the paper is called the residue. and the stuff which passes through the paper is called the filtrate.

sedimentation -Sedimentationis the tendency forparticlesinsuspensionto settle out of the fluid in which they are entrained, and come to rest against a barrier. This is due to their motion through the fluid in response to the forces acting on them: these forces can be due togravity, centrifugal accelerationorelectromagnetism. In geology sedimentation is often used as the polar opposite of erosion, i.e., the terminal end ofsediment transport. In that sense it includes the termination of transport bysaltationor truebedload transport.Settlingis the falling of suspended particles through the liquid, whereas sedimentation is the termination of the settling process.

decantation -Decantationis a process for theseparation of mixtures, by removing a top layer of liquid from which a precipitate has settled. Usually a small amount of solution must be left in the container, and care must be taken to prevent a small amount of precipitate from flowing with the solution out of the container. It is frequently used to purify a liquid by separating it from a suspension ofinsolubleparticles (e.g. in redwine, where the wine is decanted from thepotassium bitartratecrystals). For example, to obtain a sample of clear water from muddy water, muddy water is left in a container until the mud settles, and then the clear water is poured into another container.filtration -Filtrationis commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass. The fluid that pass through is call a filtrate.[1]Oversize solids in the fluid are retained, but the separation is not complete; solids will be contaminated with some fluid and filtrate will contain fine particles (depending on the pore size and filter thickness). Filtration is also used to describe somebiological processes, especially inwater treatmentandsewage treatmentin which undesirable constituents are removed by absorption into a biological film grown on or in the filter medium as inslow sand filtration.

Sedimentation=When the heavier components in a mixture settels after water is added to it,the process is known as sedimentation.

Decantation=When the water is removed the process is called decantation.

Filteration=Filteration can be used to seprate components of a mixture of an insoluble solid a liquid.

sedimentation allows to separate undissolved particles from a liquid.

to decant means to separate a liqiud from one container to another without disturbing the sediment

we use filtration to separate insoluble substances from liquids using a porous device
