Scrapping Class 12 Marks for Engineering Admissions: Is It a Good Idea?

engineering admissions 2016JEE admission woes may come to an end soon. The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) has recently suggested that the marks of class 12 will not be considered as a criteria of granting admission by all the central engineering institutes except the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The proposal is still subject to approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Once the proposal is accepted, the policy will come in effect from the next session or by 2017.

The current three-year old policy (since 2012) of giving 40% weightage to Class XII board exam results for admissions to central engineering institutes will be done away with if this new policy is implemented. The CSAB recommendations have come in view after many boards failed to submit their class 12 results with CBSE on time, thus delaying and complicating the entire admissions process. They also came across many discrepancies in marks of students. The authorities have expressed that the present duration for declaring the results and processing the admission is not sufficient. Taking these loopholes in consideration, the CSAB has come up with the idea of doing away with Class 12 board marks.

CSAB is part of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) which would make these recommendation to the Ministry. The new policy would make the 40% weightage of class 12 marks obsolete to get admission in any of the NITs and GFTIs.

All this has given rise to a debate on whether it is a good idea or not. Many school principals claim that students will not take their board exams seriously anymore if the new policy comes into effect. However, the new recommendations have been welcomed by most engineering institutes, since they have not seen any changes in the pattern of students enrolling.

This is really a good idea because maintaining both ways becomes really difficult for many students. Many of those who score well in JEE gets overall AIR less due to CBSE boards.
