Answer:

(a) Let the length of the ladder be x m.

In right-angled ∆ABC, by Pythagoras theorem
AC2 = AB2 + BC2
⇒ (x)2 = (8)2 + (6)2 
⇒ (x)= 64 + 36
⇒ x = 10 m

Hence, the length of the ladder is 10 m.

(b) Let the height of the top be x m.


In right angled MCB, 
AC2 = AB2 + BC2 [by Pythagoras theorem] 
x= (10)2 − (8)2
⇒ x= 100 − 64
⇒ x= 36 m
⇒ x = 6 m

Hence, the height of the top is 6 m.
