    Thanks for your explanation, But still it's not clear. Sometimes you wrote singular and sometimes plural............ Please explain each sentence in detail. URGENT please

    Collective nouns are those nouns that are used to represent a group of people, things, or animals. For e.g,
    A flock of sheep.
    an army of soldiers.

    The committee works hard for better schools. Why Singular ? schools are plural like sandwiches in the next sentence you used plural then why here singular?
    The committee  are having sandwiches for lunch. Why Plural ? above sentence schools you wrote singular than why here plural for sandwiches ? Earlier you wrote is then you changed to are we noticed that.
    A bouquet of yellow roses lends colour and fragrance to the room. Why Singular ?
    The jury were polled for their verdicts. Why Plural....were....The jury is collective noun then why used were?

    Here is the answer:
    1. The committee works hard for better schools. Why Singular ? 
    Ans: When referring to the collective noun as a single identity  it is treated as singular. When we are referring to the individuals within the collective noun we treat it as plural.

    2. A bouquet of yellow roses lends colour and fragrance to the room. Why Singular ?
    Ans: It means a single bouquet.

    3. The jury were polled for their verdicts. Why Plural?
    Ans: When referring to the collective noun as a single identity  it is treated as singular. When we are referring to the individuals within the collective noun we treat it as plural.
