a hydrocarbon burns in air (oxygen) giving 0.36 g water vapour andf 0.44 g of carbon di oxide as the only products . if weight of the hydro carbon is 0.16. calculate the total mass of carbon of C and H in CO2 and H2O respect tively please explain

Weight of sample = 0.16g

Moles of H2O = 0.36/18.02

= 0.0199 moles of H2O

Moles of CO2 = 0.44/44

= 0.01 moles of CO2

1 mole of H2O has 2 moles of H and 1 mole of CO2 has 1 mole of carbon

Therefore,

Moles of H = 0.0199 * 2 = 0.0398 moles of H

Moles of C = 0.01 * 1 = 0.01 moles of C

Mass of H = 0.039 * 1 = 0.039g of H

Mass of C = 0.01 * 12 = 0.12g of C
