what will happen if lotus leaf does not have a waxy coating on it?

Leaves of some plants such as lotus ,lilies, float on the surface of water. These have stomata on the upper surface as the lower surface is in contact with water. The upper surface have a waxy coating that allows the water drops to run off the leaves to prevent the leaves from sinking. They also prevent the water from collecting on the surface of the leaf.
