describe the movement of pastoral tribes in india

In the Mountains

  • The Gujjar Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The cyclic movement between summer and winter pastures was typical of many pastoral communities of the Himalayas like the Bhotiyas, Sherpas and Kinnauris
  • They had to adjust to seasonal changes and make effective use of available pastures at different places.

On the Plateaus Plains and Deserts

  • Dhangars were an important pastoral community of Maharashtra.
  • Unlike the mountain pastoralists, it was not the cold and the snow that defined the seasonal movement: rather it was the alteration of the monsoon and dry season.
  • In the dry season they moved to the coastal tracts, and left when the rains came.
  • Banjaras were also a group of graziers found in the villages of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Raikas is a pastoral community of Rajasthan. They combined cultivation with pastoralism.

The pastorals in mountains moved according to the summer and winter season. In winter they came to the bottom of the hills due to extreme cold in tops and in summer they again climbed up the hill as they get good pastures there after the snow has melted.

The pastorals in plateaus, plains and deserts moved according to the monsoon season. In monsoons they stayed in a place as for good pastures and as by winter the pastures were exausted they moved to other regions such as coastal regions where pastures would be available.
