Explain the Steps taken by french infield of education in Vietnam? What was their motive behind it?

The following steps were taken by the French in the field of education in Vietnam:

i) Building schools that taught science, hygiene and French to Vietnamese.

ii) Awarding those who had learnt French language and culture with French citizenship.

iii) Promoting western values and lifestyle as modern and one that was worth emulating.

The motives behind it were as follows:

i) Justifying and glorifying French colonial rule.

ii) Introducing the Vietnamese to French culture and thus, strengthening their association with France.

iii) Fulfil the requirement of an educated work force.

iv) Systematically dismantling the traditional education system of the Vietnamese and civilising the native people.

  • They built schools promoting French as the main language.
  • They tried to modernise the Vietnamese.
  • They tried to change values, norms and beliefs of the Vietnamese students.

Their aims after educating the Vietnamese :

  • Providing education in French would enable them to show superiority of the French culture.
  • Modernising the people would raise their standards of living which would profit the French business.
  • They needed educated people for better governence of the county.(as they could understand eachother's language).
  • Literate workers were required for jobs under the French.
