explain the term poverty . write 2 approaches by which the number of poor in the country is estimated

The following points may help you:

a. Poverty can be considered as one of the main problems hampering the progress of our country where people can't manage their basic necessities of life. It is a condition in which  a person lacks adequate resources required to maintain minimum standard of living,


b. Poverty stricken people are spread across the country and more so in rural households as do not have adequate income to meet their dietary requirements hence come under the category of food insecure people.

c.  By intake of calories- According to the Government of India, the definition of poverty is linked to the expenditure required by an average household to meet a specified minimum nutrition in terms of calories and urban poverty in particular is denoted by an intake of 2100 calories per capita per day. Rural poverty is denoted by an intake of 2400 calorie per day. This is how number of poor are estimated.

d. The consumption expenditure- Which  is set by the government at Rs 816 per person per month in the rural areas and Rs 1,000 per person per month in the urban areas. Thus, anybody, whose expenditure is less than the above figures would be termed as poor .
