The children's father had been killed in the war and a bomb had destroyed their house rendering them homeless. As the Germans had ruled the city for many years, the children had to suffer a lot and their sister, Lucia contracted tuberculosis of the spine because she could not bear the cold and starvation. The boys brought Lucia who had once upon a time wanted to be a singer but now they could only bring in just enough money for her treatment. The boys, at this young age had taken the task of caring for their sister on their young shoulders. This is the truest form of social work, to not be selfish but to work for others without the expectation of any reward. They were taking care of their sister out of love.
