Both turban and hats were used as head gears but both had their own significance. Turban was not only used to cover the head but also it was a sign of respect. Indians did not take off their turbans to pay someone respect unlike British did with their hats. Hence, both of them found it the treatment of head gears peculiar. 

Also, in the nineteenth century it was mandatory to remove shoes while entering the king's court. This was something the British could not understand and felt that their cultural identity was undermined. However, this practice was withdrawn in 1830s. But it was again implemented by the British. Indians had to take off their shoes while entering in a government office. Indians those who wore English clothes were exempted from it.
