How does sulphuric acid react with formic acid?

@ Sidra240,

Very good answer! Keep posting!

H2SO4 provides free H+ ions for the protonation of the OH group of formic acid and then eliminates the water to give protonated CO. This is simply deprotonated by the water to give CO.

So the chemical reaction between sulphuric acid and formic acid is as follow:

H2SO4(Conc.) + HCOOH -----> CO + H2O

  • -1

H2SO4(Conc.) + H.COOH -----> CO + H2O

Hope the reaction is clear

y wont it be co2

  • -1

will there be any characteristic observation?
