 Pick a spot to measure your object (such as a telephone pole)
  One should be far enough away from the object that he can see the top of it, and he need to be on level ground with the base of the object

  The weighted string should hang down freely, crossing the protractor portion of the clinometer
  Read the angle shown, and subtract from 90° to find the angle of vision from your eye to the top of the pole
