How were the towns in the medivial period developed

The following points may help you:

a. During Medeival period, temple towns, commercial centres flourished as importnat centres of trade.
b. The period for instance, witnessed massive growth in both internal and external trade.
 c. System of weighs and measures , silver coins later gold coins were introduced during this period.

Internal trade:



a. From the eighth century onwards  several small towns developed.
b.They probably emerged from large villages.
c.They usually had a mandapika  to which nearby villagers brought their produce to sell
d.They also had market streets called hatta comprising of shops.
e. There were streets for different kinds of artisans such as potters, oil pressers, sugar makers, toddy makers, smiths, stonemasons, etc
f . Usually zamindar built a fortified palace in or near these towns
.g. Buying and selling of different types of items took place like spices, saffron etc.
h. Besides that temple towns became important centre of commercial activities and craft production.


External trade:

a. Traders came to buy and sell products like horses, spices, spices.
b. Traders who came from distant paces formed guilds, associations and traded  within the peninsula and with
Southeast Asia , China.​
c. Hindu Baniyas and Muslim Bohras ​traded in the porst of Red sea, Persian Gulf,East Africa, Southeast
Asia and China.​
d.   Textiles and spices  were sold in these ports and, in exchange,gold and ivory from Africa; and spices, tin, Chinese blue pottery and silver from Southeast Asia and China were brought.
e.​Indian spices and cloth sold in the Red Sea ports which then reached European markets, and fetched very high profits.
f. For examaple, surat emerged as an important commercial centre. It was one of the biggest ports and the gateway of trade with West Asia via the Gulf of Ormuz
