is it important to increase the area under irrigation ?why?

It is very important to increase the area under irrigation due the following reasons:-

1) Water is the most important input in agriculture. Mordern methods of agriculture to increase production would be of no use without irrigation.

2)Most of the farmers till depend largely on rainfull which is highly variable and unpredictable. The distibution of  moonsoon rains is uneven in india.

3) India's total cultivated area is not under irrigation. Even today less than 40% of cutivable land is irrigated.
