List any 6 differences between Xylem and Phloem???

Phloem and xylem are complex tissues that perform transportation of food and water in a plant. They are the vascular tissues of the plant and together form vascular bundles. They work together as a unit to bring abouteffective transportation of food, nutrients, minerals and water.

Xylem:

  1. It conducts water and minerals.
  2. It consists of many dead elements.
  3. Components of xylem include tracheids, vessels , xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres.
  4. three of the four elements are dead. only xylem parenchyma is living.
  5. In addition to conduction , xylem provides mechanical strength to plant.
  6. Conduction is mostly undirectional , i.e. , from roots to apical parts of the plant.

Phloem:

  1. It conducts organic solutes or food materials.
  2. It consists of leaveing tissue.
  3. Components of phloem include sieve tubes , companian cells , phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres.
  4. Three of four elements are living.Only phloem fibres are dead.
  5. Phloem performs no mechanical function for the plants.
  6. In it conduction may be biodirectional ,i.e., from leaves to storage organs to growing parts of plants.
