The three main players of the Roman empire were 

• Emperor : The 1st emperor of the Empire, Augustus, established the Principate, replacing the former Republican form of Government. However, he proclaimed himself as the "Leading Citizen"but it was a mere fiction. 
• Senate : This group consisted of the Roman and Italian Aristocracy. They being given importance by emperor Augustus, disliked the system of Principate and missed the Republic. 
• Army : A nightmare to the Senators, the Roman army is very professional and paid. However, many mutinies took place because of their insatiable demands, to which the Senate had to pay heed.
